Site of the Village of  Woolverton or Wolverton

If you continue along the route of the old Brading Sea Wall you will come to Centurion's Copse (sometimes called Woolverton Wood)
This is thought to be a corruption of the name St. Urian's,
which was a chapel in the village of Woolverton
The site of the village is now an overgrown area, and
beneath the ground lies the burnt remains of Woolverton
Surviving traces of the Earthwork Defence system can still be seen
In 1339 or 40 the village was looted and destroyed, by fire, from an attack by the French
During the 1880s some excavation work was undertaken and a small amount of Roman pottery was found

The text below, from the Wax Museum, tells the sorry story
The truth of the story can not be verified, but it is a fact that Woolverton did exist, (see Domesday Book entry on next page) and it was attacked, and burnt,  by the French around 1339/40, and has never been rebuilt
