Isle of Wight Culver A Short History
A high view point with many good views across the Solent to the mainland
From here can often be seen the Liners, and other large ships, awaiting the arrival of the Pilot before entering Portsmouth, or Southampton
On a clear day the Nab light can be seen
The beacon, on the highest point, was placed there in 1988 to commemorate the sighting of the Spanish Armada in 1588
There was probably a beacon on this point during Elizabeth 1st reign to signal the sighting of the French or Spanish fleets
