Godshill

The church stands on top of the hill overlooking the village
Before the church was built the hill was occupied by a pagan shrine, and when the first
church was being built  in the village, the stones would, each night,
mysteriously be moved from  their location to the top of the hill
After a few nights of this it was taken as a sign from God that he wished the church to be
built on the hill
Hence the village name 'Godshill'
The present church dates back to the 14th century, and includes a 15th century
coloured wall painting of Christ

The olde worlde atmosphere of the village is maintained with it's thatched roof cottages
and rose's growing round their doors, and the winding country lanes

The Old Smithy has a landscaped garden in the shape of the Island
A walk in aviary, and models of the most famous places on the island

Godshill is also famous for its tasty cream teas
