Little Jane's Cottage Brading

From the new Town Hall go up The Mall, and the cottage is the first turning on the right.
The exact date of the building is unknown, but it has been here since the 16th Century.
Jane Squibb was featured in the book, 'Annuls of the Poor',  by the Vicar of Brading,
the Rev Leigh Richmond **
Jane, a devout Christian, died of Consumption (Pulmonary Tuberculoses) ***
in this cottage on January 30th 1799 aged 14 years.
Her grave can be seen in southeast corner of the churchyard
There are some interesting exhibits connected with the cottage in the old Town Hall over the stocks next to the church.
There is also a reconstruction of her bedroom in the Wax Museum

 ** The boards used in churches all over the world to display hymn numbers were invented in Brading by the Rev Leigh Richmond who was curate-in-charge of Brading and Yaverland 1797 to 1805

*** Pulmonary Tuberculosis, in the past was often called consumption, because it appeared to consume people from within
Symptoms were bringing up bloody phlegm, fever, pallor, and long relentless wasting of the body
The house is not open to the public as it is a private residence
