|
Sir Edward Wydeville (Captain, not Lord, of the island). Led a contingent of Islanders (40 gentlemen, and 400 commoners) to assist the Duke of Brittany against the French King
All were killed in battle except one boy who brought the sad news back to the island

After this, the English king, Henry 7th, never granted a Lordship of the island, which has remained with the crown to the present day
|
** Henry 6th (the boy King) became King of England in the early 15th century
The country was ruled by a Regent until Henry became old enough to rule
"Wisdom comes with age" may not have applied in Henry 6th case
because when he took over command he decided to do some King - making of his own
In 1444 the 21 year old Henry Beauchamp, Duke of Warwick was crowned King
of the Isle of Wight by the Monarch
He was King in name only, and did not have any power to go with the title
During his short life, Henry Beauchamp collected even more titles
He became the premier Earl of England, and was granted Bristol castle
On top of this his kingdom was extended to include the islands of
Jersey, and Guernsey
Unfortunately he did not enjoy his reign for long
A feeble man, both in mind, and body, he died at his castle in Henley, Worcs at the age of 22
He was the first and last King of the Isle of Wight
