Ryde A Short History
Ryde is the largest town on the island
It has many fine Georgian, and Victorian buildings
Union Street, and High Street have all the usual shops, and nationally well known stores
There are many fine restaurants, cafes, and pubs
Also hotels, and self catering establishments for you to stay at during your holiday
A fine esplanade, and seafront with six miles of sandy beaches
Great nightlife
The pier is half a mile long, and a train service runs along it connecting the town with the
ferry to Portsmouth
The railway runs all the way to Shanklin** and also connects with the Isle of Wight steam railway
**Shanklin has a fine beach, and a chine, once used by smugglers, and the start of the pipe line to France to pipe fuel to the army during the D Day landings
There is also a 40ft waterfall, amid many ferns, and mosses along a shady path down the chine side
Old Shanklin village is well worth a visit with it's thatched houses
