Brading Town Whipping Post 1750
and Stocks refurbished 1830
Photograph taken 1962
Brading Stocks about 1890
From a hand coloured glass Lantern Slide
The 'Whipper - in' was paid six old pence (2.5p) for whipping a man, and four old pence for whipping a
woman or child
Town stocks, why five holes?
Some theories are that the holes are one for the neck, two for the legs, and two for the arms. Very uncomfortable
Another theory is that there were originally six holes, but one was cut off when the stocks were refurbished
Yet another theory is that the fifth hole was for a one legged man who was a frequent occupant
Nobody knows the real reason for the unusual number
of holes
Any other ideas?
