Brading church St Mary the Virgin
Legend has it that during the 680s St Wilfrid (634-709)
preached Christianity to the Islanders from this spot
Apparently it is recorded that about three quarters of the population were put to death
Whether this was due to them opposing Ceadwalla, King of the South Saxons, who conquered the Island, or because they refused to be converted to Christianity is not certain
Hard, bloody, and brutal days indeed
The end result was that St Wilfrid ended up owning about a quarter of the Island, and became Bishop of Ripon
about the year 668/9
The present church was built in 1180
